Character Information

Character Name: Irene Norton née Adler
Canon: Sherlock Holmes (books)
Canon Point: Directly after "A Scandal In Bohemia"
Character Journal: [personal profile] thewoman

Appearance: The most notable thing about Irene is that she is very beautiful. She has long brown hair that she often wears in curls, and she often dresses in the usual Victorian garb of a lady. However, she often enjoys dressing in mens clothes for ease, so she's no stranger to pants. In a modern society she would probably embrace being able to wear them and no have to pretend to be a man.

Personality:

Described in the story as having “the face of the most beautiful of women, and the mind of the most resolute of men,” Irene Adler is nothing if not a woman out of her own time. Hard-headed, stubborn, and extremely clever, Irene is not your typical quiet 19th century maiden. Described as an adventuress, she has had lovers anywhere between kings and common men, travels to her heart’s content, and even dresses as a man when she feels inclined to.

Irene is one of the most iconic women in Holmes canon; even though she only appears in one story, she is extremely recognizable as the woman who out-smarted Sherlock Holmes. She certainly left an impression on him, and he did on her – she has a great deal of respect for Holmes and is just ever so infatuated with him. Her infatuation should not be mistaken as necessarily romantic, however – she sees Holmes as a respectable figure and a formidable opponent, in the most positive of ways. As a matter of fact, she views all men in a similar manner; she prefers to be in the company of those she feels she can view as intellectual equals, and due to the time period she lived, prefers the company of men over women. She would be fascinated and heartened, however, to meet women of the modern era who reflect her own desires and goals.

However, Irene is also extremely aware of her own intelligence and uses that to her advantage. She is not above being manipulative to get her way, and prefers to be in a position of power when she’s able. She is goal-oriented, but not spiteful, so while she will go to great lengths to achieve her wants and needs, she does not unnecessarily harm those when it is not in favor to her own intentions. The best example this is her history with the King of Bohemia; while he broke her heart and forsook her for another woman, her threat to reveal their affair and destroy his reputation was never went passed more than simply a threat. Irene was more than happy to let the whole thing go in order to pursue a life with her new husband; however, while she had no longer had intention to actually slander the King, she wanted him to always know she had the power to do so if she wanted. In actually, she prefers to gain her power and wants in a quiet manner, although she certainly has the attitude and intelligence to be a threat if so perceived.

Besides her rather manipulative traits, Irene is actually rather friendly and outgoing. Her career in theatre helped her develop a charismatic and likable personality, and while she tends to stay out of the spotlight in her retirement, she certainly does not object to being the center of attention in smaller circles. Holmes remarks that the people that know her seem to love her, and even Watson is taken by the gentle in manner in which she cares for Holmes when he is in disguise, almost to the point that he second guesses assisting Holmes in deceiving her.

There is also the small matter of Irene's perception of friendship, loyalty, and love. Irene doesn't have many friends; more convenient acquaintances. She travels a fair amount and values her independence, although she does like to have a social setting in which to lose herself when she so desires. Irene is loyal, but not to a fault; constantly guarded and constantly needed to be more powerful in any relationship, she rarely finds herself opening up and trusting another person completely. She feels complete trust and loyalty require a certain sacrifice of self that she is not willing to offer. Love is a particularly complex emotion for Irene; as someone renowned not only for her career but for her lovers, Irene spent the majority of her twenties moving from affair to affair as seamlessly as she did in her artistic tours. She did love the future King of Bohemia, and was angered and hurt by his betrayal which is precisely what drove her to threaten to blackmail him. She also fell in love with Godfrey Norton, who showed her a kind of loyalty and affection that Wilheim never did, although whether or not the marriage would have lasted due to Irene's defiant personality is much debated in her portrayal in other extensions of the canon. Personally, I feel that while Irene is not incapable of love, she often views it much the way she does her own sexuality; as a tool to keep herself in power in intimate situations, but her adventurous personality isn't necessarily accommodating to the ideal of settling down with one specific person for any length of time. Since most of her actions reflect that of someone who steadfastly looks out for number one, it would probably be difficult for her to extend her loyalty and affection in a way that would create an equal relationship between partners.

Irene certainly was portrayed her short story to be a unique woman - beautiful and with an undeniable attraction that drew others to her, but also perceived as cold and often dangerous by those who crossed her. Her intelligence is surprising to those around her and she is likened to the men of her time when it comes to her ambition and behavior. Although not precisely the villain she could be made out to be, Irene is certainly a force of nature in her own right.

Powers/Special Abilities: n/a
River Power: A version of Siren Song. Instead of her singing just drawing people to her, I thought it could work as a kind of compulsion that leads them to be more inclined to do what she asks when they hear her sing.

Reason for Character Choice: I played Irene quite a few years ago when before the Robert Downy Jr. movie came out at a couple games, and I really enjoyed her voice and the CR I got with her. I've been wanting to play her again and I feel like she would be an interesting fit in this game.
Additional Information: Irene is a retired Opera singer. I don't know anything about Opera. So apologies ahead of time if I screw that up.

I do hope that this strange note reaches someone who can be of assistance, as communication does seem to be this queer devices sole purpose.

I won't bore any of you with pleas for my safety or demands of how I ended up here. I won't deny a certain amount of shock considering my current circumstances. But I think it would be most pertinent to speak to anyone who may be of some assistance in this unfortunate situation. I am aware that I am in New York but I fear this is hardly the city I remember it to be.

If any wish to address my person, I shall be available in the lobby of your rooms for the next several hours, as I suspect there are no other pressing matters for me attend to at this time.

Third-Person Log Sample:

Irene's paramount complaint for her situation was that she had yet to find a place to get a decent cup of tea in the city. Manhattan sprawled, of course, and she had hardly covered most of the ground it offered, but the residents she currently shared rooms with seemed more than content with the service at Tres Bean. Irene failed to grasp the strange ambiance or the foreign concept of To-Go Cups but most of all, she missed the familiarity of her own home that this place so distinctly lacked.

The Bordega wasn't much better, and Irene abhorred it nearly as much as she abhorred the general idea of fetching her own groceries. But eating out was starting to take a toll on her already meager pocket book Irene began to accept the fact that she was either going to have to severely adjust her accustomed lifestyle to accommodate her new situation or... find a job.

As it happened, she was sitting in Tres Bean when the thought occurred to her and she pursed her lips to hold back her internal grimace, instead choosing to peruse the newspaper rather than linger on such an unthinkable thought. Back home, she had been content enough to the life she and Godfrey had begun to make for themselves and adjusting to a much more fast-paced and demanding city of the future was hardly appealing to her. The newspaper was filled with coverage of crimes and other unfortunate happenings in the city and around the world, along with an odd story here and there about the Drifters - the strange arrivals that Irene was now among. Her eyes glossed across the entertainment section, however, catching sight of some of the theatre that New York City had to offer and while none of it was particularly familiar to her, she couldn't help but give it pause, lowering the newspaper and smiling to herself.

Irene Adler, returning to the threate over a hundred years in the future. Now, wasn't that quite the idea?
